Fiberglass duct board encapsulation is a specialized HVAC restoration process. After the accessible interior surfaces have been properly cleaned and prepared, a professional-grade HVAC coating is applied over the fiberglass duct board.
The coating creates a new protective surface over the existing fiberglass. Depending on the condition of the system, this can help reinforce worn areas, contain loose fibers, reduce future fiber erosion, and make the interior surface easier to maintain.
HVAC encapsulation products are specifically manufactured to coat fiberglass duct board and duct liner. These coatings are different from ordinary paint and must be applied according to the product manufacturer’s instructions. Professional duct coatings can form a flexible, moisture-resistant surface and minimize dust accumulation on the finished coating.
Why Encapsulate Fiberglass Ductwork?
Encapsulation may be recommended when fiberglass ductwork has begun to deteriorate but is not damaged badly enough to require complete replacement.

1. Ductwork Inspection

2. Determine Whether Restoration Is Appropriate
Not every fiberglass duct system should be encapsulated.
The ductwork must be structurally stable enough to support the coating. Wet, collapsing, severely deteriorated, or extensively contaminated fiberglass may need to be removed and replaced instead.

3. Address the Cause of the Damage
Before encapsulation, the source of any moisture or continuing damage should be identified and corrected. This may include condensation, excessive indoor humidity, air leakage, HVAC performance problems, or water intrusion.
Encapsulation should not be used to hide an active moisture problem.
4. Carefully Clean the Ductwork
The ductwork is cleaned using methods appropriate for fiberglass material. Loose dust, debris, and non-adhered material must be removed before a coating is applied.
The goal is to prepare a stable surface without causing unnecessary damage to the fiberglass duct board.
5. Repair Accessible Damaged Areas
When appropriate, accessible seams, joints, penetrations, or damaged sections may be repaired before the coating is installed. Major structural damage may require partial or complete duct replacement.
6. Apply the HVAC Duct Coating

7. Allow the Coating to Dry and Cure
The HVAC system may need to remain off while the coating dries. Drying time depends on the product, temperature, humidity, ventilation, and amount of coating applied.
